We all know the baldies know their way around the decks. HOSH and Stimming are both killer and have serious hair loss problems. Well i take that back, maybe they choose to shave their heads and thats fine with me as long as they are still delivering the goodies. Anyway, Stimming has just released some new tracks. As many other german words its incredibly long and there is no way I could actually say it.

Yo,
the last time I tried watching the movie Brazil, me and four other people ended up passed out stuck to a couch. Thank god being in Brazil is not a boring as the Movie. I arrived this morning. Crazy ass weather here. One minute there is no rain and it sunny and the next you are soaking wet. But its hot, really hot. Leaving from a high of 0 C to a low of 30 C can mess you up! My blood is too thick for this. I sure all my NYE pictures ill be super sweaty. But hey thats better than having only snow angels pictures. The flight was kinda brutal, the only thing that finally got me to sleep was Fact and Fiction, by Magda!

Hey everyone, hope you had a nice weekend.

I didn't do much, saw Michel Cleis on Friday but the club and the people were such shit I had to leave earlier than I wanted. I could totally go on a huge rant about all that but I'll refrain, for your sake.

This is a picture of an enormous disco ball being suspended over the French Senate in the Jardin Luxembourg. Crazy shit I randomly found while attempting to rollerblade.

I'm looking forward to hearing Obama's plan for Afghan reinforcements tomorrow, it will signal a big shift in the war and the current White House foreign policy. Could be brilliant, could be more of the same. We'll see.

I guess this should have come yesterday with my other post, but I dont care, Magda deserves more than one mention. After listening to Fabric 49 approximately 8 times in the last 24 hours. So I decided to go out and look for some more of her mixes.

Fact and Fiction is one of the first mixes released by her. The impact of this album was huge, cause its what got her into noticed by Richie Hawtin.

Also I would like to give you a great compilation by Sebo K called Watergate 04. Like Fabric, Watergate also releases mixes and compilations.

Magda, wikipedia says you are a municipality in Brazil!

When I first read the name Magdalena Chojnacka, I thought of a polish immigrant (like Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose{weirdly enough both also have national handball players as mothers}) who went to Germany for better opportunities. Apparently this was an extremely stereotypical view of her. Sorry Magda. Born in Poland, but living most of her life away (in Detroit and Berlin), it seems she got the best of both continents, getting herself into Richie Hawtin's label Minus. Now this girl is everywhere, doing the essential mix (with Dubfire, Richie Hawtin and Loco Dice) and doing a mix for Fabric (# 49).

Fabric 49 is an incredible mix. I strongly recommend downloading it. Check out the tracklist:

The Detroit minimal scene is crazy, and this is why i decided to check up on some of its originators. Im heard some of Kevin Saunderson's music, but I did not know anything else from the other Belleville three. This is why i decided to investigate Juan Atkins (aka Model 500/Cybotron/infiniti). I found a mixed Cd called Metroplex 1985-2005. This included old school techno beats that are quite entertaining.

Minimal House

I'm a day late here and I'm not really sure why. I've had this mix structured since Tuesday evening and it seemed to slip my mind until this morning. Anyways, I've got a little over a half hour of some excellent minimal house and deep house tracks.

Before I get to the mix, I just wanted to share a video of my favorite Paul Kalkbrenner track, Dockyard. We're all huge fans of Berlin Calling at NslL, especially the soundtrack, so I spent this week digging through Kalkbrenner's past and picked up all four of his albums. So I thought I'd return from my extended hiatus with a brand new mix. But first, there are a few releases I'm anxiously awaiting.

Balance 015 mixed by Will Saul. We're all familiar with the Balance Series by now so not much to say really except October 19th cannot come soon enough.

Sounds of the Tenth Season. Techno king Sven Vath is back for the tenth annual edition of his series highlighting the best tracks of the past Ibiza season. Last year's disc was excellent and I can only expect more of the same skillful track selection and mixing.

Fabric 48 mixed by Radio Slave. Fabric releases these mix cds every other month and last September's was compiled and spun by Radio Slave. Full of dark and deep tech house, it's a superb mix in the series. Well worth checking out.

This week's mix features some light house and tech tunes, a perfect accompaniment to the cold, rainy and snowy weather those of us in the northeast have been subjected to. The unseasonal climate has drawn me to these soft, melancholic tracks. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

for sure hope you enjoyed your day today a lot more than i did. yeah, today sucked balls. it all started last night at friends party...

i have a few drinks, getting super psyched for dj mehdi, and also meet this really cool guy (hottie!). so far, so good...so the peeps, the dreamboat and i all head off to the show.

we get there and dj mehdi is sooooo quality! i definitely recommend going to see him anytime. he plays a bunch of my favorite tracks, including the proxy remix of what you need (brilliant track by the way). at this point my night is totally bitchin so i thought, what the hell, i'll try get the hottie alone and maybe flirt a bit. we talk for a while and he seems interested. huzzah. i ask him to go for a walk (because trying to have a real conversation with someone in a club is about as easy as trying to fly an airplane through a snow storm)...he says yes (heck yeah!). we find a nice place to sit in the park and it's all smiles and cute looks. i'm thinkin this is a major score...

until this drunk dude shows up. he starts shouting "get out of my hood you fuckers!" "get the fuck out!"

i say "hey man, this is a public park, we can sit here if we want to."

he walks closer, still yelling this ridiculous stuff and threatening us, so i stand up and tell him, "hey man, fuck off. what's your problem anyway?"

prolly not the smartest thing i've ever done, but i was kinda drunk.

the dude rushes me and hits me broad side the head. it doesn't hurt too much, but first there's this high pitched noise, then silence...i can't hear anything out of my left ear.

i couldn't believe it! i'm super sooo pissed he hit me i say, "what kinda fuckin ass hole hits a girl? what the fuck!"

at this point the dreamboat jumps in, but before he can do anything the drunken ass takes a swing and punches the him right in the nose. then tackles him to the ground. what happens next i can't really remember exactly but within a few seconds a security guard shows up and stops the dude from seriously beating on my would be protector. the cops show up at almost the same time and manage to arrest the ass hole.

four hours later the cutie and i leave the hospital after being checked over by a doctor for police records and giving our statements. it's six in the morning and i still can't hear a thing from my left ear.

twenty four hours later (right now) i still can't hear any low frequency sounds and it's driving me nuts, argh!!!! how am i supposed to survive when i can only hear half the bass???? so yeah, today sucked

the upside is that i got to spend a bunch of time with the dreamboat, lol. he got all super protective and cute and really really sweet...walked me home and everything. maybe i should get punched on first dates more often, heh.

Flunk - This Is What You Get (2009)

Finally! Flunk came out with their sixth studio album, This Is What You Get. What? You are not excited? You should be. I may be biased, as I have been a Flunk fan for a long time, but this release has exceeded all my expectations. The clever Norwegians normally fall into sleepy-breezy-lo-fi electronica range, with their dreamy rhythms and almost shoegazing feel, and melodies almost dissolving in the air. Now, however, having almost completely reinvented themselves, Flunk play steady. Strong beats, clear melodies, and Anja Oyen Vister's Björk-like vocals may not be finger-snapping, feet-tapping material, but they will definitely set the rhythm. Well... in a relaxing way. Some songs I would even classify as trip-hop. So obviously I'm not promising Alex Gopher or anything, but if it's late and you need to relax after all that dancing, or if it's a rainy day and you feel semi-energetic, this is the stuff. Oh, and did I mention that there is an awesome cover of Radiohead's "Karma Police"? That's right.

But seriously folks, 'the advantage of a classical education is that it enables you to despise the wealth that it prevents you from achieving' as some dude once said. Although it is wise to remember that there aren't really any rich psychologists or scientists or sociologists or whatever...these people study what they do because they love it, because learning is an end in itself for them and not for some mere material gain. Education has a tricky place in the means-ends dichotomy, but I feel that 'classical' education (the usual academic fare, not business/management or learning a trade) is most honorably approached as an end...and I feel really bad for those who have a 'corrupted' view of education (as per Aristotle's account of the corruption of moneymakers, who confuse money as an end instead of the means it is).
But once again I'm ranting so here're some sweet tech-house and prog tracks with a little electro thrown in at the end:

In any case University is done (with only a measly bachelor of philosophy to show for it) and we're off to a very uncertain future. I am back everyone with a fresh mix for your listening pleasure. This week's collection exemplifies the style I am currently immersing myself in; deep tech/house/minimal tunes. All of these songs are new, released in the last month or so. Salvatore Freda and Michel Cleis , two blossoming producers releasing music on Cadenza Records, team up for the standout track in the mix, Sassicaia. A clever melody with endless sonic modulations rests on top of a driving minimal tech groove, delivering a fantastic 9 minutes of music from two rising stars. Michel Cleis made a big splash at WMC when his hit track, La Mezcla, was dropped by Radio Slave among others. I've posted a video below of the track which is well worth downloading.

First up, I've got these two really hard hitting tracks. If I wasn't so afraid of my neighbor across the street (who we've nicknamed intense dad) I'd have these songs cranked up so loud you could feel the bass a mile away.

The Proxy is this super intense group from Russia. Even if you're not familiar with the name, I'm sure you all must have heard their mega popular track, The Raven. As for Blatta & Inesha, I posted a mix they did with Congorock a few weeks ago but sadly it was removed. For what reason? I can't really say cuz nobody bothered to tell me, but if you managed to catch it before the take down you'll like the track below.

Today I have a very special mix for everyone. I've been working for the last few weeks on a promotional set, something to help me leverage gigs spinning in New York City. The full mix will be around an hour in length but I'm only going to the post the first 30 minutes of music. It is essentially a 25 minute crescendo of dark, rhythmic tech house building to the first drop; a track, marked by its acapella elucidating the visceral qualities of house music, by Brothers Vibe. Chateau Flight is a collaboration between two french producers, Chaix and Cohen, who've been making records for more than twelve years. Andy Gellerman on AllMusic says:

Nicolas Chaix (I:Cube) met Gilbert Cohen in the mid-'90s, after he sent Cohen a demo of his productions. At the time, Cohen had just started his Versatile label. Cohen liked Chaix's material enough to sign him, and by the end of 1997, Versatile had released several I:Cube records. Chaix and Cohen eventually began to collaborate as Château Flight.

Their music is super chill, melodic and meditative mixed up with a dash of loneliness. It's something I would listen to while watching puffy clouds float by on a sunny day.

Speaking of Moonbootica, I recently found this really awesome mix that they performed for Barcardi B-Live. Ok ok, they did do it way back in August, but it's till quality six months later---I promise. First and foremost, their transitions are REALLY nice. Maybe not everything is executed perfectly, but more often than not I can't tell where one song ends and another begins. Second, their music is impossibly melodic and their track selection is amazing. With Moonbootica, there's no way to go wrong.

For how long have you been making music?

Quite a while. I got interested in composing in '90 when my dad bought a Commodore Amiga 500. Around that time a lot of new demo groups were founded or migrated from the C64 and I got to know a few people from both scenes who raised my interest in electronic music and the composing possibilities of the Amiga - it only had 4 channels and 22khz 8bit sound triggered by a stepsequencer but for us it was the bomb. So I got myself a sound-digitizer to sample sounds from tapes I got from my buddies who were more into DJ'ing. In '92 I knew my way around Soundtracker and later Protracker pretty well--same sh*t, just more intuitive GUI--so I recorded some homebrew tracks on tape and listened to them with buddies or during private parties. One day I brought a tape to Bastian's (Fukkk Offf) place and he instantly decided he needed an Amiga as well. He bought one a few days later and started composing pretty eagerly. At some point he decided to switch to hardware synths and Atari since the midi support for Amiga was utter crap while the Atari had built-in midi support and Cubase. We always wanted a TB-303 which got overhyped during that time and was unaffordable for two students with no income. Luckily, Roland released the MC-303 in '96, which was very limited in modulation but also offered drums and a stepsequencer, so after saving like crazy we each got one of those. Since we were asked to play at private parties, we grouped up with other buddies and played at several private and later public events/clubs (including the legendary U.N.I.T. in Hamburg in '97). Goa and Psychedelic tracks became more dominant as this was the genre with the most freaked out outdoor parties.

After that period I decided to visit the school of arts and had to work to pay my rent, which left little time for composing. Although a career as musician was surely an option, I opted for media design since I wanted to do something where I could work with both audio and visuals. Bastian always found the time to keep on producing and I’m glad he did because his tracks and remixes are pure gold. I already talked about some cooperation mixes with him or maybe even some live set revival in Paris, where he's been playing frequently. Sadly, my current job, creative director, consumes plenty of time so I have no idea if or when we'll find time for that.

If you had to pick any three songs by other artists that you wish you had made, which ones would they be?

The first one would definitely be one of those stupid Christmas songs they play every year on the radio till your ears bleed--but only for the money of course. But no, seriously—my first one would be a real nice pumping gem from '94: "Emmanuel Top: Turkish Bazar (Original)." The other two are very hard to pick. I wish I were a bit younger and knew fewer songs. Well, Fukkk Offf’s Remix of DJ Dan’s "Seduction" would be a good candidate—that track is pure gold, probably because I loved the original. Finally, I’d pick "Donald Brown - French Kiss" because that is one kick ass remix of the epic classic from Li'l Louis and a good example of a really diverse and stylish remix.

What's one thing you love about the music scene, and one thing you absolutely hate?

People have mixed feelings about internet file sharing, or 'pirating,' where do you stand on the issue?

Luckily for me the software I used in my early (poor) days was freeware and no one cared if you sampled instruments from tapes because they had lousy quality anyway. I don't know many artists who had the cash to buy professional software just to find out if music is their thing. On the other hand, I don't know anyone who didn't buy the software when s/he went commercial. I think there should be a fair use policy for everything: it should be free if you don’t make money with it and use it for educational purposes only but the second you make a cent you go buy it and gain +10 karma. Regarding sharing music –since when is that something new? People have shared music since there was music – that’s the point of music. If the music rocks, you will still either buy the tracks or visit concerts/livesets - only rich greedy musicians are whining about sharing. You won’t find any social class where they don't share or download music and none of them is wearing an eye patch and a parrot.

Since you first became involved, what are the biggest changes you’ve noticed in the electronic music culture, particularly in terms of the music and the scene surrounding it? What do you think sparked these changes?

Well, the most noticeable aspect would be the vast variety of genres –there have always been subgenres, but now every subgenre has other subgenres. "New styles" get new names and I think only a few people on this planet can list ALL the genres and subgenres there are now. Fifteen years ago you had Techno and House. Maybe you could have been more specific than that, but not as detailed as today. "Techno" was everything with a 4/4 Bassdrum and more than 120bpm—luckily that changed to keep out the trash. People are also more experimental with styles today; techno had its stereotypical, immutable style, but now artists mix and mash like crazy. I really like it. Producing has become more popular and affordable, while the internet offers plenty of resources for every sound, so finding a publisher takes only a few clicks. I think we all can profit from the variety of styles we have today. A few years ago I wished people would produce more tracks of a certain style, but there was no genre for it and no one who would take the lead. I think today’s artists aren’t so much into the idol thing anymore. They don’t copy styles they know but instead prefer to produce new sounds or take established genres in creative directions.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Like Cartman said "I have the super power to have many super powers." I think immortality would become boring after 300 years and super strength is only good for throwing cars around... pretty useless. I’d pick the ability to fly. You could escape from whatever you want to wherever you want with whomever you want. Sounds good to me.

Saltillo - Ganglion

A ganglion, in humans, is a collection of cell bodies of either sensory or autonomic neurons. It is a hub, a relay point or, simpler still, an intermediary connection between various neural pathways. I could propose several rather tacky theories about why Saltillo (aka Menton Mathews III) named his debut album Ganglion (2006) the way he did, but I'd rather let you decide.

All right, so this release is neither new nor perfect. There are some rather cheesy compositions, mostly the ones with vocals. But the instrumental pieces, brilliant in their elegance, convey rather ravishingly a wide range of emotions within the melancholic spectrum. The thing is, the guy plays, like, 8 instruments, including cello and violin. The combination of clear, emotive sounds these instruments produce, and harsh beats punching the rhythm in the flow of classical notation create an experience that is truly unique. Electronica and classical music, which I always thought to be similar in principle, supplement each other rather well in practice.

In short, it's the elegance and taste that conquered my rather jaded mind. I like stylish music, and Saltillo certainly has style. One can enjoy his beat as intensely as his cello. Maybe you have to be a little melodramatic to really get it, but same can be said about Gotan Project, for example. In any case, this track has been enjoyed by most people I ordered to listen. I mean, suggested...

We've decided to add a new regular feature to NslL; a mix featuring our bloggers favourite tracks of the past month. The tracks this time around were chosen by Nextron and NeonGuns.

Before I get to the mix, I wanted to give a brief shout out to the software responsible for the mini sets I've been creating; Ableton Live. Not only a fantastic program for mixing, but for musical production as well. It is even featured as "supporting character" in 2008's Berlin Calling, a film about the rise and fall of a German techno producer. I did not have the opportunity to see this movie in theatres, but I'm eagerly awaiting its release onto DVD in mid 2009. I've posted a video about the movie and Ableton's role in the film.

I'll keep this short and sweet. This is the fourth installment of the weekly noirceur mixes, featuring some chilled out Deep and Tech House. The last track is a release by one of my new favourite producers, Anthony Collins. Half American, half French, this rising talent began his career DJ'ng in the South of France around the age of 18, eventually taking residency in several after hours clubs in Paris. Logically transitioning to producing his own tracks after many years behind the decks, Anthony Collins has been releasing music since 2007, and receiving much deserved accolade. Collins describes his tracks as Deep House, Minimal and Deep Tech, tunes that are appreciable beyond the club environment. Melodic simplicity is coupled with fantastic rhythmic grooves and creative phrasing that allow his stripped down sound a completeness, that would otherwise appear empty in the hands of a weaker producer. His debut full length will be released on Freak n Chic this March. I've posted a few videos of Collins spinning at an Italian radio station in addition to the mix. Enjoy.

Minimale Tech Mix

This post will be the third installment of my weekly mixes, and after scrapping a Deep House set, I've decided to go with an eclectic group of minimale techno tracks. The opening track is a release from Loco Dice, a former German hip hop DJ who now produces minimale and techno, Pimp Jackson is Talking. An extended narrative from an unknown New York rapper (sounds to me like Jay Z but I'm probably wrong about this) dominates the track, the opening lines of which "...this is some weird ass shit..." succinctly describes the bewildered attitude many of my American friends display when I play for them the music I listen.

Aside from Dice, the tracks that feature most prominently in the set are 2Quite and Something Suitable by Format: B. This German duo galvanized my interest in the minimale genre after I stumbled upon their 2008 LP, Steam Circuit. A combination of infectious rhythms, sonic simplicity and their signature dark, ominous and I'll have to admit at times creepy, vocals, Format: B consistently produce quality tracks that I find myself listening to over and over again.

Here's another short mix for your listening pleasure. This time I've gotten away from the lighter tech house sound and moved onto some proper heavy techno. The standout track in the mix is Arjuna Schiks award winning Afterbelle. Released in late 2008, Afterbelle is the opening track of an EP bearing the same. Arjuna composes wonderfully progressive tracks that truly push the boundaries of techno, challenging other artists to escape the often formulaic sound of the genre. The latter part of the mix is dominated by Pig & Dan, a duo responsible for some of the best big room techno around. They produce dynamic tracks, ones full of peaks and troughs that lift you out of this world and abruptly return you to reality. The intensity is matched with captivating melodies that make for all together fantastic club tracks. Enjoy.

As requested by the rest of the crew at NslL, I've put together a short set of music from one of my favourite labels, Diynamic. With artists such as Stimming and H.O.S.H., Diynamic is garnering much deserved accolade from the dance music community. Stimming typifies the label's motif, orchestral sounds, live percussion (recorded and performed himself) mixed with driving, techy beats and tantalizing melodies. Diynamic is a progressive label, setting a high standard for techno, minimale, deep and tech house.

Just a heads up, Balance 014 was released today in Australia, to be followed by a February 14th release in Europe, I believe. Joris Voorn, best known for his remix of Robert Babicz's Dark Flower, is the creative force behind this new installment. A tracklist has been leaked and it's more than impressive; over 100 tracks spun over two dics. Voorn uses a variety of songs to create cohesive tracks, which he mixes from one to the next. Balance 014 will be the most complex mix Stomp has ever released, and I'm sure the most highly anticipated one to date.

The Whitest Boy Alive - Rules (2008)

Remember how I was saying that no one is cooler than Erlend Øye? Well, he just had to go ahead and prove me right. Coming up with the new album, Rules (2009) his project The Whitest Boy Alive has finally established itself fully on the electronic music scene. In my opinion far superior to their 2006 effort, Dreams (though it had its bright moments, with much-remixed "Golden Cage"), Rules provides an atmosphere of quiet brooding and restrained passion in the best tradition of the band's steady beats, scant strings and Erlend's soft voice - singing, as he often does, about everyday relationship conundrums, including love triangles, time bombs, break-ups, and reiterating the age-old agade about vain intentions. The album with its "much-celebrated" potential will become, in my mind, one of the best albums of 2009 - considering the blend of lrycs and music that are impeccable in their simplicity. Hurry and get on the "rollercoaster ride of emotions" - you won't be disappointed.

Bossa Nova: The Essential Brazilian 60's

It's cold here in Montreal! This week's temperature dropped below 20C. It may well be the time we should remember the sun and the beach. And even though not all of us have been as fortunate as Gui and Nextron, who were surviving in extreme beach conditions somewhere around São Paulo during the holidays, at least we can daydream of Brazil - the land of big Jesus, great beaches, beautiful women and, of course, unique music.

I enjoy a good bossa nova song from time to time. All right, a lot of the time. So this post's purpose will be to counterweight all the dance music we usually post - just in case you're adventurous enough to try something new. Of course most of us know, or at least have a vague idea what bossa nova sounds like, and all of us have probably heard "Girl From Ipanema". Prepare yourselves, for MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) is much, much more than that. Seriously, that's not even a very good song, I have no idea why it's so popular.

Today's post features Siriusmo and Modeselektor. Both groups are native to Berlin and their music shares the same bouncy bass-lines as well as an affinity for a melodic touch. Modeselektor were first signed in 1997, almost ten years before Siriusmo entered the scene. In fact, Siriusmo musically "grew up" with Modeselektor and their influence on his music is quite evident. Chills from Norway: Erlend Øye

You may be cool, but you're not Erlend Øye cool. More known for his pop-folk duo with Eirik Glambek Bøe, Kings of Convenience, Erlend (born in Bergen, Norway) nevertheless has produced a lot of solo work, as well as taking on a side project, The Whitest Boy Alive while living in Berlin. This post, however, deals with his contribution to DJ-Kicks CD series. Wikipedia tells me DJ-Kicks started in 1995 and since then has seen some big-name contributors, such as Kruder & Dorfmeister and Thievery Corporation. Erlend's DJ-Kicks album is not new (2004) but it is my favourite, so I thought I'd share. I mean, it's got Phoenix, Avenue D, The Rapture, Röyksopp, and an amazing remix of Cornelius's "Drop" - what more could you ever need?

Sup sup y’all? We be broadcastin’ straight from Brazil (Bresioo to those in the know) after a horrendous fuck-up on Continental’s part in Newark. All we got in compensation was a free beer and 10% off a ticket! But it was worth it, best new years I can remember.

Anti New Year's Resolution

Hallo hallo! How were your New Year's Eve Celebrations? Has anyone made a New Year's resolution?

Yesterday a snow storm rolled through my area and deposited about eight inches on the ground. At noon six inches had already fallen, the wind was blowing twenty miles per hour, visibility was one hundred and fifty feet and the temperature hovered near fifteen degrees fahrenheit--so I decided to go for a walk.

If you've never taken a stroll during a snow storm, you should try it sometime. It's exhilarating. The rushing wind and soft crunch of snow fill your ears. The biting cold accentuates the tingling touch of snow flakes falling. Blinding white fills you vision. You leave behind all those qualities of you which, day-to-day, seem important and are reminded of those parts of you which are vital. Only you and the storm exist, in a manner that's somehow peaceful and comforting. It's a nice way to be.

As I walked, it occurred to me that a New Year's resolution is about becoming something more than you current self. Standing at the heart of a storm is about being less. I wondered, if I resolve to loose five pounds or pay more attention to the news, will these attributes I gain actually enrich my life? Will I be better? What if, instead, I were reduced to a more elemental me? The self I find in the storm.

This year I've decided on an Anti New Year's resolution. Perhaps by attempting to be less, I will actually achieve more. At least it's food for thought...

Now for some music! Since I've been feeling rather contemplative, here's some tracks that might suit you if you'd like to do a bit of thinking.

I went to see Simian Mobile Disco at Coda last spring. Chromeo was in town for a gig and decided to show up at Coda to see SMD too. I was standing at the back of the club to cool off and randomly they came over and stood right next to me (OMG!!!!). Yeah...that's my lame story...I stood next to Chromeo. Either way, go to I Love Neon. Nextron and I went to last year's party at SAT and it was super fun!

When Calvin Harris came to Montreal, I didn't go. I didn't go because I thought he would just perform live and not do anything I haven't already heard on his album.

Oh but what a fool I realize I was after hearing his essential mix, which is apparently what he played at his Canadian shows. Download and tracklist here. Its an amazing mix, blending heavy electro house, disco, and prog house. The first song is all it took to hook me, highly recommended.

Bearries is a group outta Chicago dropping both heavy grinding beats and simple, almost experimental, electronic jams. Good both for dancing and zoning out.

Their album 'Fantasy Black Channel' is quite original in a retro way, using some sounds and progressions reminiscent of the Talking Heads and Frank Zappa. This group Metronomy released their album 'Nights Out' about a month ago to rave blogosphere acclaim. The name rang a bell, but I just put them off as another British electronic-pop group...Until I actually heard their music that is, and realized that I had seen them at Montreal's Meg festival in August and had a great time.

I highly recommend that you actually buy 'Nights Out' cuz its a brilliant album. Here's a little teaser, one of my favorites:

Many thanks to G for that awesome Alex Metric set. Here to follow up I have the latest Essential Mix from the boys at BBC Radio 1: Deadmau5.

This guy has literally exploded into the scene, turning out new remixes and touring constantly. Although not solely the hard electro genre that we usually feature here, Deadmau5's style is nonetheless varied, enjoyable, and certainly unique. Many of the tracks and transitions remind me of the later Balance mixes, which nicely accentuates and complements the heavier songs. The last third is not as good as the first two, with some cheesy tracks you'll have to put up with. But the rest is worth it.

It's a mix of Erol Alkan's remix of the Klaxon's Golden Skans, an extended light and spacey track laid over Felix Cartal's L'amour. DesignerDrugs were featured in a mix I posted a week ago on the blog. They do a good job at remixing pop tracks, adding thick, heavy basslines over the original vocals, consistently delivering quality club tracks. I think it is finally time for my humble contribution to this flourishing project of ours. This time I am posting something which should be a crowd pleaser - another Ninja Tune favourite, Hint. Hailing from Sussex, England and signed to the label relatively recently, Hint's debut Portakabin Fever has something to offer to a listener searching for Bonobo's brand of chillout, intelligent afterparty music. In fact, Last.fm tells me Hint has toured with Bonobo and Minotaur Shock (another great producer whose work I'm hoping to post soon), which for me was reason enough to check his music out. Somewhat airy, and always with a good variety of melody and rhythm, Portakabin Fever is oh-so-good on a Sunday morning. Try it yourself.
